Batman: Year One Review: Before Batman: Named as one of IGN’s 25 greatest Batman stories of all time and one of the books that any Batman fan would swear by, Frank Miller’s 1987 classic Batman Year One finally comes to life as a full length animated movie. Besides inspiring elements in various Batman animated shows since the 1990s, Batman Year One is also the main inspiration for the blockbuster hit “Batman Begins”. So with its influence seen in all incarnations of Batman in the last 15 years, the producers are hard pressed to come up with anything original. So instead of just retelling Batman’s origins, drawing influence from Batman Year One, the creative team decided to stick as close as possible to the source material and literally transfer the book into animated form. Astro Boy (2009 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

94 Min. | Animation – Action – Comedy | December 2009

IMDB Rating: 6.3

Director: David Bowers

Staring: Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell

Astro Boy Review: Before Astro Boy was ever released in theatres, it used to be a television show that aired in Japan. And just like any other television show, sooner or later it turned into a movie. Thankfully, Astro Boy wasn’t filmed in live-action. Who knows how that could’ve turned out. What we do know from past experiences, is that live-action cartoon adaptations have high failure probability. This is not always true, but for the majority, it is. Astro Boy is the story of an ordinary child who is turned into a cybernetic organism from his science-whiz father. Freddie Highmore plays the character of Astro Boy and his voice doesn’t sound out of place so that’s a plus. Dr. Tenma is Astro Boy’s father and he is voiced by Nicolas Cage. It’s an interesting choice actually because it’s believable. But if listened to close enough, one can imagine Cage talking into the microphone. [18+] Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

102 Min. | Comedy – Crime – Mystery | November 2005

IMDB Rating: 7.6

Director: Shane Black

Staring: Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Review: The immensely likable novel “Bodies are where you find them”, written by Brett Halliday, has been adapted for the screen by Shane Black and the result is one of the funniest movies playing around. “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” boasts an amazing dialog with some of the wittiest lines of any film in recent memory. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang pays a tremendous bonus to fans of the genre, which combines a detective story technique with some amusement and irony thrown in. The result is a fun time at the movies. Mr. Halliday pays tribute to those forgotten cheap pulp fiction novels that were so popular at one time in this country. This Is the End (2013 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

105 Min. | Comedy – Fantasy | August 2013

IMDB Rating: 6.7

Directors: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen

Staring: James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen

This Is the End Review: Although ‘This is the end’ does not have the greatest storyline in the history of film, it is a very inventive movie in its own way. The fact that every actor and actress plays him or herself makes the movie quite original and refreshing. Besides that, there is also the fact that the makers took an overused theme, the end of the world, and made it completely their own. The Wizard of Oz (1939 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

101 Min. | Adventure – Family – Fantasy | December 1939

IMDB Rating: 8.1

Directors: Victor Fleming, George Cukor

Staring: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger

The Wizard of Oz Review: Where to begin? MGM’s elaborate adaptation of L.Frank Baum’s 1900 fantasy classic the wonderful The Wizard of Oz not only became an institution among itself (and practically defined the concept of modern popular culture), but is reported to be the most viewed film ever made. A sharp screenplay effectively condenses the novel’s text into a workable film, and director Victor Fleming (along with countless other behind-the-scenes technicians) craft a visually stimulating fantasy world that surpasses the expectations of even the most imaginative viewers. Brimming with stunning visual effects (the film’s fierce tornado is an FX feat that has yet to be surpassed by CGI), witty dialogue, and eye-popping Technicolor, The Wizard of Oz truly lives up to it’s reputation as a once-in-a-lifetime film where every element comes together flawlessly. The Last Picture Show (1971 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

118 Min. | Drama | December 1971

IMDB Rating: 8.1

Director: Peter Bogdanovich

Staring: Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd

The Last Picture Show Review: This is a character study wherein the main character is a small West Texas town, circa 1951. In the U.S., the early 1950s symbolized a transition from nineteenth century agrarian values to twentieth century urbanism. In The Last Picture Show, various people who live in the town must confront the reality that time moves on. Things change. Assumptions of previous generations give way to the untested assumptions of the future. The Last Picture Show’s theme is thus American cultural change, and the personal disillusionment that such change can bring. It is a powerful theme, and the film imparts that theme with logical clarity and emotional frankness. Continue reading The Last Picture Show (1971 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

The Grapes of Wrath (1940 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

128 Min. | Drama | March 1940

IMDB Rating: 8.1

Director: John Ford

Staring: Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine

The Grapes of Wrath Review: The Grapes of Wrath is the story of the Joad family, who are run off of their land in Oklahoma because of drought and poverty. I think that one of the most striking elements of The Grapes of Wrath is the black and white cinematography. Obviously, there wasn’t a lot of variation on this particular subject in 1940, but especially today, the lack of color enhances the feelings of poverty and desperation and emptiness due to the family’s loss of their home. In this way, because it would not be nearly as noticeable in 1940 as it is today, this time-enhanced effect of the black and white film stock has allowed for the film’s impact to actually grow with time. The 39 Steps (1935 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

85 Min. | Mystery – Thriller | November 1935

IMDB Rating: 7.8

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Staring: Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim

The 39 Steps Review: The 39 Steps is extraordinary in every conceivabe way. Anyone who doesn’t mind slightly old, black-and-white movies will be enraptured by this Hitchcock classic, which was one of the first films to present sophisticated and witty banter between two ill-matched characters. What makes it even more extraordinary is that it virtually totally alters the source material, yet still comes across as a work of ingenuity. The story of The 39 Steps, concerns Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) a handsome young man who owns a London flat. A mysterious woman comes to him for help, claiming that she is being hunted by some spies. Hannay helps her, but when she is murdered in his home it look like he is to blame, and he has to go on the run from the police. En route, he has many adventures as he flees across the South Scotland landscapes, including being handcuffed to a woman (Madeline Carroll) who happens to think he is guilty of the murder. Sweet Smell of Success (1957 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

95 Min. | Drama – Film-Noir | August 1957

IMDB Rating: 8.2

Director: Alexander Mackendrick

Staring: Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison

Sweet Smell of Success Review: The fact that in 1957 Sweet Smell of Success was made at all is proof that Walter Winchell’s decline was already setting in. Burt Lancaster’s J.J. Hunsecker based on Winchell and very frightening accurately portrays the columnist and the power he wielded. For those who are interested in how Winchell got to where he was J.J. Hunsecker I would recommend Neal Gabler’s biography of him which came out a few years ago. Sweet Smell of Success is the story of a day in the life of this monster who everyone on the planet it seems is terrified of offending. Like Winchell at the Stork Club, Hunsecker holds court like some monarch at a nightclub where people are obsequiously asking for some recognition in his column. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011 – Free Download) English-Hindi 400 MB DVD-SCR

135 Min. | Action – Adventure – Fantasy | May 2011

IMDB Rating: 6.7

Director: Rob Marshall

Staring: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review: What Rob Marshall did with Pirates series, no one else could have done with such finesse and panache. Dropping out two key protagonists without explanations and instead of picking on famous novels, he opted for rather under-rated Tim Power’s On Stranger Tides to fit the characters. Similarly, what Johnny Depp has been doing in all Pirates movies and what he did in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, no one else could have done it with such perfection. That’s Johnny Depp (Jack Sparrow) for you. Most of you must have seen Indian Jones and the Last Crusade. You’re gonna have a feel of Deja Vu in many of the scenes. Following an appropriately pulpy prologue, the film opens on erstwhile Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) as he’s marooned in London in search of a ship, and pursued by local authorities who he makes little serious effort to avoid. Black Hawk Down (2001 – Free Download) English-Hindi 400 MB DVD-SCR

145 Min. | Drama – History – War | December 2001

IMDB Rating: 7.7

Director: Ridley Scott

Staring: Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore

Black Hawk Down Review: When talking about war movies, there are many great ones that immediately spring to mind. Since the 70’s, three of them have formed a bit of a holy trinity, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, and Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. These three movies have set the bar for all other war movies that have come along since then. When it was announced that Gladiator director, Ridley Scott, would be adapting Mark Bowden’s book, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, filmgoers knew that they would be in for a treat. Needless to say, Ridley Scott has made the ultimate war movie with Black Hawk Down. Unlike some war films that temper the battle with slower character-building sequences, you have to wait only thirty minutes for the Rangers’ mission to go into effect.
