Black Hawk Down Review: When talking about war movies, there are many great ones that immediately spring to mind. Since the 70’s, three of them have formed a bit of a holy trinity, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, and Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. These three movies have set the bar for all other war movies that have come along since then. When it was announced that Gladiator director, Ridley Scott, would be adapting Mark Bowden’s book, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, filmgoers knew that they would be in for a treat. Needless to say, Ridley Scott has made the ultimate war movie with Black Hawk Down. Unlike some war films that temper the battle with slower character-building sequences, you have to wait only thirty minutes for the Rangers’ mission to go into effect. Metropolis (1927 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

152 Min. | Drama – Sci-Fi | March 1927

IMDB Rating: 8.3

Director: Fritz Lang

Staring: Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Fröhlich

Metropolis Review: Although written by Fritz Lang’s wife Thea von Harbou, ‘Metropolis’ was originally Lang’s idea, he was inspired by the sight of New York’s skyscrapers when he sailed to America in 1925. During his American trip, he visited the set of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and met Lon Chaney! Too bad the encounter wasn’t filmed. Despite its epic power, ‘Metropolis’ makes very little sense. The two major male characters are a father and son named Freder and Fredersen, so why is the one named Freder*sen* the father (not son) of the one cried Freder? Why does the master of Metropolis deliberately connive to destroy the city that he built? Why is Rotwang’s crude little cottage the only pre-Fredersen building that wasn’t demolished during the construction of this city? How and why did Rotwang’s high-tech laboratory manage to get constructed beneath that cottage without disturbing it? Continue reading Metropolis (1927 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

Laura (1944 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

87 Min. | Crime – Drama – Film-Noir | January 1944

IMDB Rating: 8.1

Director: Otto Preminger

Staring: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb

Laura Review: One of the best suspense films of the 1940s, “Laura” is loaded with elegant sophistication, witty dialogue, unscrupulous characters, and romantic obsession, all wrapped in hauntingly beautiful music. Lovely Gene Tierney is Laura, the young advertising executive allegedly murdered at the front door of her apartment. Dana Andrews is well cast as Mark MacPherson, the handsome, no nonsense detective assigned to unravel the case. Clifton Webb is superb as Waldo Lydecker, Laura’s mentor and an egocentric, effeminate newspaper columnist who has made a career of eliminating Laura’s prospective suitors. Lydecker detests Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), a southern playboy to whom Laura is engaged. Anne Treadwell (Judith Anderson) is Laura’s aunt who, incidentally, is in love with Carpenter herself. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968 – Free Download) English 400 MB DVD-RIP

2001: A Space Odyssey Review: Mankind’s Self awakening is the theme of “2001: A Space Odyssey”, a process that unfolds along a space-time continuum. We “see” our primordial past, and we “infer” a cosmic future. The powers of intuition thus become the doors of perception, in our ongoing collective journey. From this transcendental perspective, a conventional, egocentric plot seems superfluous. Our frenzied conflicts and self-important dialogue are consumed in evolutionary change, and are irrelevant in a cosmos that is vast beyond comprehension. It’s a tough lesson for a vain and aggressive species. Not surprising then that some of us huff and puff about 2001: A Space Odyssey is slowness and minimal story. For perceptive viewers, the remuneration is an inspirational sense of wonder and awe.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is mostly visual, geometric symbols guide our intuition. Circles and arcs represent nature. Right angles represent conscious intelligence. Some people think the sleek, black monolith is a Von Neumann probe. Maybe. Without doubt, the monolith is a visual metaphor for an extraterrestrial intelligence whose physical form is never shown. Mystery is more profound than explanation.

“2001: A Space Odyssey” is unique among films in content and scope. The cinematography is out-of-this-world, the special and visual effects are breathtaking, and the classical music is sublime. I rarely use the word “masterpiece” to describe a movie. But Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” is art in the highest sense, like Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”, or Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night”.
