Director: Akira Kurosawa

Ikiru Review

Ikiru is a film about life. Constantly complex and thought-provoking, although simple at the same time, it tells a story about life’s limits, how we perceive life and the fact that life is short and not to be wasted. Our hero is Kanji Watanabe, the most unlikely ‘hero’ of all time. He works in a dreary city office, where nothing happens and it’s all very meaningless. Watanabe is particularly boring, which has lead to him being nicknamed ‘The Mummy’ by a fellow worker. He later learns that he is dying from stomach cancer and that he only has six months to live. My Neighbor Totoro Review

From the brilliant “Walt Disney of Japan”, Hayao Miyazaki, comes a wonderful soothing film that everyone will simply embrace. Featuring stunning animation, endearing personable characters, and a heart-tugging storyline that’s simple, enchanting, and even dramatic. Sometimes you feel like you’re not watching an animated children’s movie, because the characters and the storyline seem so realistic. In My Neighbor Totoro, there’s no bad guy, no song numbers, and no references to pop-culture. Most cartoons feature these and it gets old and routine. Here we have a break from all of that and get a real masterpiece. Continue reading My Neighbor Totoro (1988 – Free Download) Japanese DVD-RIP

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006 – Free Download) Spanish DVD-RIP

Director: Guillermo del Toro

Starring: Ivana Baquero, Ariadna Gil, Sergi López

Pan’s Labyrinth Review

Set during Franco’s mopping up exercise after the Spanish Civil War, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is a wonderful, dark fairy tale that, in a metaphor for Spain itself, teeters on the edge of nightmare dreamscapes of corruption, violence and the death of innocents. Pan’s Labyrinth is definitely not for young children. Although the fantasy sequences are gorgeously realised, and are fairy tales in the truest sense, most of the story exists outside of the dreamland, in the even more frightening world of a real life struggle of ideas and ideology. Director: Michael Mann

Heat Review

Heat is an amazing film. Has stunning battle sequences, culminating in the airport scene which was perhaps not as spectacular as other action sequences but still manages to be brilliant. The bank robbing scene is fantastic and feels very real and you can almost believe it is happening as you watch it. You almost want De Niro to get away with it all and ride off into the sunset at the end, even though he and his criminal buddies have done some terrible things throughout their time including bank robbing and killing whoever got in the way. The ‘humanising’ relationship that he has really does endear you to the criminal though, despite knowing what he has done and is doing throughout the film, Heat.
